Energy Vampires: Essential Ways to Protect Your Energy

Energy Vampires can be people who leave you feeling tired and drained. They tend to have chronically low energy.  Therefore, they must rely upon others to provide the energy they lack.

Many times, it’s the people in our daily lives–like family members, coworkers, and friends–who affect our energy the most.  Being in situations with those who feed on your energy can leave you feeling tense, angry, frustrated, nauseated, and exhausted.

It may be surprising to realize that, at times, you are the one taking energy from others.

Types of “Energy Vampires”

“Energy Vampires” can present themselves with different characteristics.  You may recognize one or more of the following in your own life.

  • The Victim

You may have a friend who constantly complains to you about the same problems in her life.  She is convinced that the world is against her. Yet, she fails to take responsibility for changing her situation.

As a result, you feel drained after your interactions with her, while she leaves feeling refreshed.

  • The Drama Queen

There may be someone in your life that suffers from a sense of emptiness.  To fill this void, they tend to turn minor events into catastrophes.  This gives them a sense of validation.

For example, a drama queen (or king!) may relate how they nearly lost their life in a serious car accident, when the truth is that they only experienced a slight fender bender.  The reactions that others give them in response to their antics leaves them with a sense of false fulfillment.

  • The Narcissist

Narcissists are usually consumed with a sense of self-importance.  They like to make you feel small in order to convince themselves of their superiority.

Therefore, a narcissist will use blatant tactics such as name-calling, blaming, and shaming.  They may even resort to using more passive-aggressive mechanisms, such as withholding affection.

  • The Criticizer

Is there someone in your life who is always criticizing or belittling you?  These people can spot a flaw from miles away.

Furthermore, they think that it’s their duty to remind you of your shortcomings. They can leave you doubting your sense of self-worth and feeling not good enough.

Here are 5 simple ways to prevent others from draining you energetically:

1.  If you find yourself in an unavoidable conversation with an energy vampire, make sure that you break eye contact every few seconds.  This will prevent the rapid drain of energy that accompanies deep, lengthy eye contact.

You may also find it helpful to position your body at an angle to the person who is speaking, instead of having an open posture towards them.

2. Imagine a shield of protective golden light all around you.  This will provide a buffer between you and any incoming negative energy.

3. When you’re in an encounter with a person who is yelling or hurling insults, do not react!

Above all, remain as neutral and centered as possible.  If you react in an emotional manner, you will be giving away your power and energy.

4.  Hold a high vibration of love in challenging times.  Once you find yourself in a space of loving thoughts and emotions, lower energies cannot easily affect you.

5.  In some cases, it may be necessary for you to “cut the cord” between you and another person.  We all have energetic connections, or cords, that link us to each other.  Sometimes, these connections need to be dissolved in order to maintain our own reserve of energy.

It does not serve anyone’s highest good to allow them to take your vitality.  Encourage those around you to be aware of how they affect others, and make sure that you are being responsible with your own actions.
