Chakras, chakras—what’s all the fuss about chakras? I remember the first time that I heard the word “chakras.” I was a twenty-year-old college student who decided to try a Yoga class. The whole concept of energy was very intriguing to me! At the end of the class, I approached the teacher and asked her why Yoga would be beneficial as a type of regular exercise. She replied, “Well, it will help to align your chakras.” I simply nodded my head and said, “Ok,“ even though I was confused and not certain about the meaning of the word “chakra”. And it would be another five years until I understood the significance of these energy centers.
Every living person has a series of energy fields that are referred to as chakras. Though not visible on the physical level, these seven energy centers are located within the body, in the front and back of the spinal column. Each chakra has its own specific color and vibrates at a specific frequency. Interestingly, even though this information on chakras has just come to the West within the last two decades, Asian cultures have held knowledge of these centers for more than 2,000 years.

In Sanskrit, the word chakra means “wheel”, so they are conceptualized as spinning wheels. These swirling wheels of energy closely correspond to massive nerve centers in the body. Each of the seven main chakras contains bundles of nerves and major organs as well as our psychological, emotional and spiritual states of being.[1]
- The first three chakras begin at the base of the spine and they are more physical in nature. The first chakra is the Root chakra. This is the chakra of stability and security
- The second chakra, or Sacral Chakra, is our creativity center
- The third chakra, the Solar Plexus Chakra, is the seat of our personal power and is located in the stomach region
- Uniting the three lower chakras with the upper chakras is the fourth chakra, located at the heart center. The Heart chakra is our source of love and connection
- The fifth, sixth, and seventh chakras are the chakras of spirit. The fifth chakra, located at the area of the throat, is our source of verbal expression and the ability to speak our highest truth
- The sixth chakra is located between the eyebrows and is often referred to as the Third Eye. This is our center of intuition
- Located at the crown of the head, the seventh chakra is the chakra of spiritual connection to our higher selves, others, and the Divine
Throughout the next few weeks, I will be writing about the individual chakras in greater detail, along with ways to tell if your chakras open and functioning, as opposed to imbalanced. Reiki and Sound Therapy can be utilized to cleanse, balance, and align the chakras.
